About Bug Zoo

Bug Zoo Inc. – A Note from the Founder

The Early Years

Where it all started. I was born on a farm and had a lifelong love of animals and adventure.

I've been drawn to animals for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I was the kid who brought home every stray, studied every creature I could find, and knew early on that I wanted to dedicate my life to understanding and sharing the natural world.

I went on to study Entomology and Apiculture at the University of Guelph, then served as Alberta's Provincial Apiary Inspector.  This work that gave me firsthand experience with regulation, biosecurity, and the critical importance of protecting ecosystems.

Crystal Gardens & the Spark

In the early 1990s, I was working part-time at Crystal Gardens in Victoria, BC while studying Garry Oak Phylloxera.  Crystal Gardens was a government-run facility with lush tropical plants and few exotic animals and birds.  It was a very popular and beloved sanctuary for tourists and locals alike, but it was closed down due to lack of funding. Prior to closing, I set up a few insect exhibits for the facility with some of my "pet bugs".  I cared for the animals, and whenever I had time, I would give impromptu tours for the visitors.  People were fascinated with the bug but had no idea what they were looking at.  They would look right at an insect and not know where the head was or the back end. Something as simple as pointing that out would light them up. It was a real joy for me to show them. They'd leave thinking they'd discovered something extraordinary (and they had!).

That experience changed everything. I realized there was a hunger for this sort of experience.... a real, hands-on education "zoo" with the alien creatures most people overlook, misunderstand or fear. Crystal Gardens wasn't in a position to expand, but I was ambitious and ready to build something of my own.

Opening the Victoria Bug Zoo (1997)

The original Bug Zoo logo — my design, my brand

I contacted a commercial real estate agent, found a space, and opened the Victoria Bug Zoo in October 1997. From day one, I figured it out as I went, putting one foot in front of the other.

At the time, there were few (if any) rules or regulations in Canada for importing exotic insects. I became the person who helped create them. Working directly with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), I co-developed the initial regulatory framework for exotic insect imports, including quarantine facility requirements. I made sure we never brought in pest species or anything that could survive in the Canadian environment. Cross-border regulatory compliance became a core part of my work.

I traveled the world and built supplier relationships, collected specimens, and focused on in-house rearing to ensure I had the best insect collection available to the public anywhere in the whole world.  The namesake of my corporation is INTERNATIONAL Bug Zoos Inc. after all.

The 2004 Renovation

After years in a tiny gallery space on Wharf Street, I moved the Bug Zoo in 2004 to the Courtney Street location and poured everything I had into a full renovation. I wanted it to be perfect... every detail was considered.  It was a fresh start.

The Bug Zoo became a place where families, school groups, and curious adults could experience the wonder of entomology and arachnology up close. I ran it with pride for 17 years.

The Licensing Agreement & Its Termination

In 2014, I licensed the trademark to a business partner with the belief that we shared the same values — integrity, responsibility, and the mission to showcase the amazing world of entomology and arachnology to the general public, in the best possible light.

Unfortunately, that trust was deeply misplaced.

Despite repeated breaches of the trademark licensing agreement, I endeavored to resolve the situation professionally for over 10 years. As of February 2025, I have formally terminated the trademark licensing agreement, and yet, the brand continues to be used without permission. This has damaged both its integrity and my original vision.

To be clear: any use of my trademarked name, brand elements, or reputation outside of this official site and my direct control is unauthorized.

This isn't just about business. It's about ethics in business, IP ownership, and the legal right to protect what you've built. Thank you to everyone who has supported me through this. I'm taking steps (legal and otherwise) to reclaim what is mine, advance the mission, and I'll keep you updated as things unfold.

🐞 Bug Zoo Inc. —
