Little Miss Muffet

Sat on a tuffet,

Eating her curds and whey, along came a spider who sat down beside her, and frightened Miss Muffet away.

Have you ever seen a spider up close? Maybe you’ve watched a spider build her web? Spiders are amazing! They keep the number of flies and other unwanted bugs down. Did you know that a spider’s silk is super strong? In fact, spider silk is stronger than steel of the same size. A strand of spider silk the width of a pencil could stop a jumbo jet in flight. Someday spider silk might be used to make bulletproof vests and bridges! Spiders can spin 7 different kinds of silk. Each kind of silk has a different purpose. For example, they make sticky silk to trap insects in their webs, but they use a different kind of silk that isn't sticky to move around on. Spiders are truly amazing creatures!

Mary Mary Quite Contrary

How does your garden grow?

With silver bells and cockle shells and pretty maids all in a row.

Have you ever helped in a garden? Maybe you’ve watched a caterpillar munch on a leaf? Caterpillars are amazing! They have a big job to do! They eat and eat and eat, so they can turn into beautiful butterflies and moths. A caterpillar sheds its skin 4 or 5 times as it grows. Each time it sheds its skin, it comes out bigger and sometimes a different color. Butterflies and moths help pollinate flowers, just like bees! Did you know that a butterfly tastes with its feet? When a butterfly lands on a flower, it can taste the flower to see if it has sweet nectar to drink. Moths are nocturnal, which means that they sleep during the day and are awake at night. Some moths don’t have mouths, so they don’t eat anything as adults! Caterpillars, butterflies, and moths are truly amazing creatures!

Ladybug Ladybug

Fly away home,

Your house is on fire and your children are gone, all except one, and that's little Ann, for she crept under the pudding pan.

Have you ever held a ladybug in your hand? Maybe you’ve wondered why they’re called ladybugs? Ladybugs are amazing! They are called ladybugs because in the Middle Ages, farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary when pests were eating their crops. Then ladybugs came and ate all the pests and saved their crops. The farmers called the ladybugs Beetles of Our Lady which was shortened to ladybug. The spots on a ladybug tell you how old it is. Each spot represents one year. Ladybugs are beetles and can have up to 24 spots! Ladybugs are truly amazing creatures!
