Let’s whip up these crunchy critters that crunch, munch, and dip into chocolaty goodness you’ll all love! Recipe below.

Why You’ll Crave It
- Quick to make: Just 20 minutes from mixing to munching.
- Budget-friendly: Pantry staples stretch to serve many little bug hoppers.
- Kid-friendly: Easy steps perfect for junior chefs to join the fun without any scary bits.
Ingredients
- 1 cup water (240ml)
- 6 tbsp unsalted butter (85g)
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar (can substitute with organic cane sugar)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (120g) — (gluten-free flour can work too, but texture varies)
- 3 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil (for frying; sunflower or canola oil also work)
- Cinnamon sugar sprinkle:
- 3/4 cup sugar (our “sleepy beetles” for sweetness - this is plain sugar)
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- Chocolate dipping sauce:
- 2/3 cup chocolate chips (use dairy-free if preferred)
- 2/3 cup heavy cream (or coconut cream for a kid-safe, dairy-free option)
- 2 tsp cinnamon (a tiny “pollen dust” touch in the sauce)
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, bring water, butter, salt, and sugar to a rolling boil over medium-high heat. (Kid helper: watch from a distance with an adult!)
- Remove from heat immediately, then stir in flour all at once until combined, about 30 to 60 seconds. Return to low heat and cook, stirring for 30 more seconds.
- Transfer dough to a mixer bowl (or use a sturdy spoon for hand mixing). Beat in eggs one at a time, plus vanilla extract, making the dough smooth and glossy. (Kid helper: scrape sides carefully.)
- Heat vegetable oil in a large, deep pan to 370°F (190°C). Use a candy thermometer to check. Safety first!
- Spoon dough into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip (or zip up a sturdy plastic bag and snip a corner for no-star fun). Pipe 6-inch “bug trails” into hot oil, snipping with scissors. Fry 3-4 at a time until golden (1.5 to 2 minutes each side).
- Remove with tongs and drain on paper towels briefly. Roll while still warm in “sleepy beetle dust” (cinnamon sugar mix).
- For chocolate sauce: warm chocolate chips, cinnamon, and cream in a heatproof bowl over simmering water until silky. Kids love to stir slowly but watch for steam!
- Serve churros piled high with a cup of the warm chocolate sauce for dipping.
Tiny Science Nugget
Dough puffs in hot oil because water inside turns into steam, making tiny bubbles that puff up the crispy shell—just like a balloon inflating with sweet, crunchy air!
Storage + Lunchbox Tips
Store cooled churros in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Rewarm in a 350°F (180°C) oven for 5 minutes to restore crunch before packing for a bug-tastic lunch!
Bug Quiz Time
What is the main reason churros puff up when fried?
A) The sugar melts
B) Steam from water in the dough makes bubbles
C) Eggs expand in hot oil
D) Vanilla extract creates air pockets
Answer: B) Steam from water in the dough makes bubbles.
Fun fact: Some ants actually farm fungi on leaves, showing us nature’s own way of creating “bubbles” of life underground!
