Apple Crisp That Bugs Out with Crunchy Crickets!

Why You’ll Crave It

  • Speedy Sweetness: Ready in just about 1 hour from prep to yum!
  • Budget-Friendly: Uses pantry staples and simple fresh apples.
  • Kid-Approved: Sweet, soft apples with playful “bug crunch” topping kids adore.

Ingredients

Spiced Apples:

  • 6 organic apples (Golden Delicious, Fuji, or Granny Smith), peeled and chopped
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • ¾ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1½ tsp fresh lemon juice

Crunchy Cricket Topping (aka toasted pecans):

  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • ¾ cup old-fashioned oats (quick oats swap is OK)
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour (gluten-free flour for allergies)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes
  • ½ cup chopped toasted pecans ("crunchy crickets" for delight)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your nest: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter or non-stick spray an 8x8 inch baking dish. (Kid helper: buttering the dish is a fun start!)
  2. Buggy apples: In a mixing bowl, toss chopped apples with sugar, ¾ tsp cinnamon, and lemon juice until coated. Transfer to baking dish.
  3. Mix bug topping: Combine brown sugar, oats, flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, salt, and diced butter in a separate bowl. Use a pastry cutter (or two forks) to press butter into dry mix until pea-sized crumbs form. Stir in “crunchy crickets” pecans. (Kid helper: stirring pecans safely with an adult nearby is great fun!)
  4. Spread the crunch: Evenly sprinkle topping over apples, gently patting it down for full coverage.
  5. Bake the bug feast: Pop into the oven for 40–50 minutes, until topping is golden and apples bubbling. Och! Enjoy the house filling with that yumminess!
  6. Serve: Let cool slightly before serving warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Tiny Science Nugget

Did you know the butter in the topping coats the oats and flour, helping tiny crumb clusters form? This is called “cutting in butter,” and it’s what gives your crisp that perfect crunch! Also, pecans add healthy oils that roast to a nutty bug crunch!

Storage + Lunchbox Tips

Cover leftover crisp and store in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 350°F oven for 15-20 minutes to revive the crunch! Perfect for sneaky lunchbox surprises.
