Three Kids’ Books that Encourage Kindness, Exploration, and Growth

There was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe

She had so many children, she didn't know what to do

The old woman had a HUGE problem! Not only did she have too many kids to count, but they wouldn't stop squishing bugs! She tried to tell them to stop, but nothing worked. Finally, she had an idea! She gathered all the children around and told them this story.

Long ago, people thought the earth was flat. Could you imagine that? All the scientists believed if you sailed too far out into the ocean, you would fall off the edge. But one day, a very brave explorer decided to find out if it was true.

He built a huge ship and set out to sea. He sailed for days and days. One day, the sailors came to him and said, We must turn back, or we will all perish! The explorer knew they were right, but he decided to wait one more day. The next day, he saw something in the distance. As they got closer, the sailors realized it was land! They had sailed all the way around the world and were back where they started. From that day on, everyone knew the earth was round!

I'm telling you this story to show you that even the smartest people can be wrong. It's important to be curious and learn new things. Maybe bugs aren't as yucky as you think! Maybe they are actually really cool!

The children were amazed! They decided to explore the garden and see what they could find. They saw all sorts of amazing bugs! There were ants carrying leaves many times their size, spiders spinning intricate webs, and beetles rolling balls of dung. The kids were having so much fun, they didn't even realize they were learning!

The old woman was so happy. Her children had finally learned to appreciate the little things in life. And they all lived happily ever after!

Little Miss Muffet

Sat on a tuffet, eating her curds and whey. Along came a spider, and sat down beside her, and frightened Miss Muffet away.

This is a story about Little Miss Muffet, but in this story, things went a little differently. Little Miss Muffet was a very curious girl. She loved to explore the garden and learn about all the creatures that lived there. One day, she was sitting on her tuffet, eating her curds and whey, when she saw a spider.

Most people would have been scared, but not Little Miss Muffet. She was fascinated by the spider. She watched as it spun its web, and she wondered how it could make something so beautiful.

Hello Mr. Spider, she said. The spider stopped spinning his web and looked at her. He had never spoken to a human before, but he was not afraid. Hello Little Miss Muffet, he said. Why are you not scared of me? Most humans run away screaming!

Why would I be scared? she asked. You are much smaller than me, and besides, you are very interesting! The spider was surprised. No one had ever called him interesting before. Would you like to be friends? she asked. I would like that very much, said the spider.

And so, Little Miss Muffet and the spider became friends. They would often sit together in the garden, and Little Miss Muffet would ask the spider all sorts of questions about his life. She learned that spiders are very important creatures. They eat all sorts of pesky bugs, like flies and mosquitoes. Without spiders, we would be overrun with bugs!

Little Miss Muffet was so glad she had overcome her fear of spiders. She had made a new friend, and she had learned something new. From that day on, Little Miss Muffet was never afraid of spiders again. In fact, she became a spider advocate! She told everyone she met how important and amazing spiders are. And she lived happily ever after with all her eight-legged friends!

Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary

How does your garden grow? With silver bells, and cockle shells, and pretty maids all in a row.

Mary was a very curious girl. She loved exploring her garden and learning about all the different plants and animals that lived there. One day, she was walking through the garden when she saw a strange bug. It was long and skinny, with six legs and a pair of antennae. Mary had never seen a bug like it before.

She bent down to get a closer look. The bug was brown and had a hard shell. It was moving very slowly, and it seemed to be struggling. Mary felt sorry for the bug, so she decided to help it.

She gently picked up the bug and carried it over to a patch of soft grass. She set the bug down and watched as it slowly crawled away. Mary was happy that she had been able to help the bug. She knew that even the smallest creatures deserve to be treated with kindness.

Mary continued on her walk, and she soon came across another bug. This bug was small and round, with bright red spots. Mary knew that this was a ladybug. She had always loved ladybugs, and she was excited to see one up close.

She watched as the ladybug crawled from leaf to leaf, looking for food. Ladybugs are very helpful creatures, because they eat aphids, which are tiny bugs that can damage plants. Mary was glad that there were ladybugs in her garden to help keep the plants healthy.

Mary continued exploring her garden, and she saw all sorts of amazing bugs. She saw ants carrying leaves many times their size, spiders spinning intricate webs, and beetles rolling balls of dung. Mary was amazed by all the different bugs that lived in her garden. She realized that bugs are not just icky creatures to be squished, but they are actually very important members of the ecosystem.

From that day on, Mary was a bug lover. She would often spend hours in her garden, watching the bugs and learning about their lives. She even started a bug collection, so she could study the bugs more closely. Mary was so grateful for all the amazing bugs that lived in her garden. She knew that they were her friends, and she would always do her best to protect them.
