"If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride."
Have you ever wished you could fly? What if you could fly on the back of a butterfly?
What would you see? Where would you GO!?
Sophie loved bugs. She knew they were important and she always tried to protect them. One day, Sophie was playing in the garden when she saw a beautiful butterfly. It had large wings with bright colors of orange, yellow, and black. Sophie had never seen a butterfly like *THIS before. Curious! She carefully snuck up to it, hoping to get a better look. As she got closer, she noticed that the butterfly's wing was hurt. One wing looked torn, and it was having trouble flying. Sophie wanted to help, but she didn't want to scare the butterfly. As she got closer, the butterfly seemed to understand that Sophie was there to help. It didn't fly away as she approached. Sophie gently picked up the butterfly and carried it inside to show her mom. "Hey Mom, look. Can we help?!!" Sophie said.
Sophie's Mom got out her special bug book. They looked it up and learned it was a Monarch butterfly. They read that Monarch butterflies can migrate thousands of miles! How amazing!! But this butterfly could not migrate with a torn wing.
What to do?!
Sophie's Mom carefully used a tiny piece of tape to fix the tear in its wing. It was so small - how could something so small also be so strong! They put the butterfly in a jar to let its wing heal and gave it fresh flowers to drink the nectar. The butterfly seemed happy and fluttered its wings as if to say "Thank You!" They decided to call her, FLUTTER.
Later that day, Sophie and her Mom took Flutter outside. The sun felt warm, and it was a perfect day for flying. Sophie opened the jar and waited to see what Flutter would do. Flutter peeked out from under the lid. She moved to the edge of the jar, looked at Sophie, and then to her surprise, landed softly on Sophie's shoulder! Sophie was afraid to move! She didn't want to scare Flutter away. Flutter waited patiently as if she needed Sophie to follow. She then fluttered her wings and flew off Sophie's shoulder and hovered in front of her face. Sophie thought to herself, "Is she waiting for me?" She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and followed Flutter.
When she opened her eyes, she gasped in amazement. She was no longer standing in her backyard but flying high above it! Somehow, she had shrunk to the size of Flutter, and was riding on the butterfly's back. Soaring!!
"This is incredible!" Sophie whispered, her heart racing with excitement.
Flutter's wings sparkled in the sunlight as they soared over treetops and rooftops. Sophie saw her neighborhood from a whole new perspective. They flew past blooming flowers that now looked as big as houses, and Sophie marveled at the intricate patterns on their petals.
As they flew, Sophie noticed other insects going about their day. She saw bees pollinating flowers, ants working together to carry food, and even a spider weaving its web. She realized how much life and activity was happening in the world of bugs that people rarely noticed.
Flutter took Sophie on an amazing journey, showing her the beauty and secrets of the insect world. They visited a monarch butterfly migration site, where thousands of butterflies gathered on tree branches. Sophie was awestruck by the spectacle of colors!
As the sun began to set, Flutter carried Sophie back to her garden. Gently, they landed on a flower, and Sophie found herself returning to her normal size. Flutter perched on her finger.....Sophie smiled brightly, knowing she had experienced something truly magical. "Thank you, Flutter," she said softly. "I'll never forget this adventure."
Flutter's antennae twitched as if in response, and then it took off into the sunset to sleep under a flower until morning. Sophie watched as her new friend fluttered away, disappearing into the warm glow of the sunset.
Just as Sophie was about to go back inside, she heard a faint humming noise. She looked around, trying to locate the source. Suddenly, a swarm of sparkling fireflies flew out of the garden, forming a dazzling display of light and color. Sophie gasped in wonder.
"Flutter, what's happening?" she asked, her eyes wide with excitement.
Flutter flew back to Sophie's shoulder, its wings beating rapidly. "The fireflies are celebrating our friendship!" it whispered in a tiny voice. "We've never had a human friend before. You've shown us that kindness knows no boundaries, no matter how big or small we are."
The fireflies began to spell out a message in the sky, using their lights to form words: "THANK YOU, SOPHIE. YOU'RE A TRUE FRIEND TO BUGS EVERYWHERE!"
Sophie beamed with pride, feeling happy that she could make a difference....
