Creatures

Little Miss Muffet

Sat on a tuffet, eating her curds and whey,
Along came a spider, and sat down beside her,
And frightened Miss Muffet away.

Bugs are cool and amazing?! 🐞

Did you know that without spiders we would be overrun with flies and mosquitoes? Yuck! Spiders quietly spin sticky webs to catch their food. They don’t chase after bugs – they patiently wait. Spiders are super important for keeping the number of insects under control. Did you know that there are over 45,000 different types of spiders in the world? Wow!

If you see a spider, try to say “Hi” and tell them thank you for helping to keep the flies away. Then watch what they do – maybe they are spinning a web or maybe they just caught a fly for dinner.

Ladybug, Ladybug

Ladybug, ladybug, fly away home,
Your house is on fire and your children are alone.

Bugs are cool and amazing?! 🐞

Did you know that ladybugs are a type of beetle and not a bug? Beetles have hard outer wings that protect their delicate flying wings. When a ladybug lands, it tucks its flying wings under its hard outer wings. Cool right?

Did you know that not all ladybugs are red with black spots? Some ladybugs are orange or yellow and they can have stripes instead of spots. Ladybugs are great helpers in the garden because they eat aphids and other small insects that can eat the leaves of plants.

Next time you see a ladybug, say “Hi” and watch where it goes. Ladybugs are fun to watch and they are helpful too.

What Are Little Boys Made Of?

What are little boys made of?
What are little boys made of?
Frogs and snails, and puppy-dogs' tails,
That’s what little boys are made of.

Bugs are cool and amazing?! 🐞

Did you know that frogs and snails are not insects but are important parts of our ecosystem? Frogs start out as tadpoles – they look like little fish. As they grow they lose their tails and grow legs! Frogs like to eat flies and mosquitoes and other bugs.

Snails are super cool too! They carry their houses on their backs and leave a trail of slime everywhere they go. Snails like to eat dead plants which helps keep gardens tidy.

Next time you see a frog or a snail, say “Hi” and watch where they go!
