Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Food coloring (various colors to create butterfly wings)

For the Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Assorted food colorings

Decoration

  • Black decorating icing (for outlining wings)
  • Assorted candies (for embellishing)

Instructions

Prepare the Cake

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly among multiple bowls (depending on how many colors you want) and color each with food coloring to create vibrant butterfly wings.
  6. Pour the colored batter into the prepared cake pans, swirling gently with a knife to create a marbled effect.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool for 10 minutes in the pans, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Decorate the Cake

  1. While the cakes are cooling, prepare the frosting by beating the butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, beating until smooth and spreadable. Divide the frosting into multiple bowls and tint each with food coloring.
  2. Once the cakes are cool, level them with a knife or cake leveler.
  3. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a thin layer of frosting on top. Add the second cake layer and apply a crumb coat to the entire cake. Refrigerate for about 15 minutes to set.
  4. Decorate the cake with the colored frostings to resemble butterfly wings, using black decorating icing to outline the wings and add details. Use assorted candies for additional embellishments.
  5. Refrigerate the cake until ready to serve, allowing the frosting to set and the colors to brighten.

With every slice of Kite Kuchen, you and your guests will embark on a delightful culinary adventure, reminiscent of a sunny day chasing butterflies. It's a perfect way to add a magical touch to any celebration or to simply enjoy a moment of whimsy and sweetness.
