Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet, Eating her curds and whey; Along came a spider who sat down beside her and asked, “What’s in the bowl today?”
Shouted Little Miss Muffet, “A big scary spider! Eek! Help it’s got eight legs! And… and… eight eyes! Go away! exclaimed Miss Muffet.” Why did you run away? Spiders are our friends, and they are super cool! Did you know that spiders can’t hurt you and they actually help us? It’s true, they eat all the pesky bugs that fly around our heads and crawl on our food.
How many kinds of spiders are there?
There are more than 45,000 different kinds of spiders and they are found everywhere in the world - except in the air and the ocean, of course! Most spiders are very, very small - some are tinier than a freckle! The largest spider is the Goliath Bird-eating Tarantula. Can you guess what it eats? You got it - birds! But don’t worry, it doesn’t eat very many, and it only eats very small birds.
What is a spider web made of?
Spider silk is spun from silk glands located at the tip of a spider's abdomen. Most spiders have three pairs of spinnerets that resemble tiny nozzles. Each gland produces a thread for a special purpose -- for example, one thread for sticky, capturing lines and another for the strong, structural lines. Some spiders produce up to seven types of silk. Pretty cool, right?!
