🐛🍰
Get ready to wiggle and wobble your way into the kitchen with these delightful caterpillar cupcakes that are super easy to make and oh-so-fun to decorate! Inspired by the classic “Very Hungry Caterpillar,” each cupcake becomes a colorful segment of our favorite garden critter, complete with gummy worm friends. Let’s have a munching good time!
Ingredients
- 1 box white cupcake mix (and the ingredients listed on the box)
- Red and green food coloring (for a truly fruity look!)
- 12 gummy worms (your caterpillar's friendly pals)
- 12 Tootsie Rolls (for those deliciously hardworking stems)
- 6 green fruit slice candies (to add extra flair!)
- Buttercream frosting (homemade or store-bought)
- Optional: Sprinkles, chocolate chips, or edible glitter (to make your caterpillar sparkle!)
Fun Idea: Swap in your favorite flavors! Strawberry cake mix with pink frosting? Yes, please! Or chocolate cupcakes with mint frosting for a garden surprise!
Instructions
Preheat Your Bug Oven: Fire up your oven to 350°F (175°C). Don’t forget to ask a grown-up for help!
Mix It Up: Prepare the white cupcake mix according to the package directions. Add some “butterfly magic” by dividing the batter into different bowls. Add a few drops of red and green food coloring to some bowls and mix until your batter is as colorful as a summer garden!
Bake Away: Place cupcake liners in a muffin tin. Fill each liner about ¾ full with your magical batter. Pop them in the oven until golden brown, about the time it takes to sing the “Wiggle Worm” song a few times! 🐍
Frosting Fun: Once your cupcakes are cool, grab your buttercream frosting and fill a piping bag with a star tip. Frost each cupcake with a generous swirl, or just slap it on with a knife – the messier, the better in this bug party!
Make It Caterpillar-tastic:
For the body segments, arrange your cupcakes in a wiggly line. To make your caterpillar’s head, use a smoothly frosted cupcake as the first in line. Stick Tootsie Rolls into the head for a cute little stem!
Add the Face: Use two Life Savers for eyes, mini M&M’s for pupils, and licorice for a big caterpillar smile! Don’t forget to sprinkle some edible glitter for a sparkly finish.
Wormy Friends: Place a gummy worm on top of each cupcake. Wiggle them into shape so they look like they’re having a sweet time!
Serve and Share: Keep your caterpillar cupcakes covered until it’s time to gobble them down. They make a perfect addition to any party, especially a “Very Hungry Caterpillar” theme!
Fun Bug Fact
Did you know? Caterpillars can eat up to 27,000 times their weight in a single month! That’s like you eating your whole wardrobe! Crazy, right?
Safety Tip
Always ask for adult assistance when using the oven or sharp objects (like scissors for cutting licorice).
