Ingredients:

  • 6 large whole wheat tortillas
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, for a sweet twist)

Instructions:

Preparation:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Take the whole wheat tortillas and using a cicada-shaped cookie cutter, punch out cicada-shaped pieces. If you don't have one, simply cut out cicada shapes with a sharp knife. You should aim to get 5-6 cicadas per tortilla.

Making the Spice Mix:

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, chili powder, and ground black pepper. Add sugar if you're going for the slightly sweet version. This will be your cicada chip seasoning.

Seasoning and Baking:

  1. Brush each tortilla cicada lightly with olive oil on both sides.
  2. Sprinkle the spice mix evenly over the cicada shapes, ensuring both sides are well coated.
  3. Arrange the seasoned cicada shapes on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer, making sure they don't overlap.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until they are crisp and golden brown at the edges. Keep a close eye on them to prevent burning.
  5. Remove from oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes. They will continue to crisp up as they cool.
  6. Your Cicada Chips are now ready to enjoy! Serve them up as a novel snack at your next gathering or enjoy them with your favorite dips. These chips capture the crunch reminiscent of a cicada’s song, making them a perfect tribute to nature’s little musicians.
